Co-Packaged Optics With Multimode Fiber Interface Employing 2-D VCSEL Matrix

We propose and demonstrate a mode-division-multiplexed transmitter by employing VCSEL-based 2-D matrix multi-plane light converter (MPLC). The triangular spots from VCSELs are designed with 250-m pitch in both x- y- directions for scalable low-loss mode multiplexing. directly modulated co-packaged BiCMOS drivers on silicon interposer, fabricated wafer level. MPLC is utilized to form seven phase masks convert the individual Gaussian beams multiplex HermiteGaussian modes, which can be coupled into multi-mode fiber. In demonstration, we packaged ten 10-G class drivers, factor of optics 10-mm x 10-mm. With fan-out evaluation board, sub-module characterized short long transmissions multiplexing outputs VCSELs. testing results indicate 200-Gb/s capacity over 100-m MMF direct detection 28-km few-mode fiber coherent detection.
